DIRTY SECRET TRAIL RUN TO BENEFIT PROJECT FIT
A NON-PROFIT YOUTH FITNESS INITIATIVE
Project Fit is a free after school running program that encourages youth fitness offered by Fleet Feet Sports Sacramento. Provided at no charge to any Sacramento elementary school, Fleet Feet Sports provides the training materials, program details, and a coaching session to parent or school volunteers who lead the program. Additional support is offered to Title One, low income schools, to include free race entries to local races for children and a coaching stipend for coach volunteers.
Young children are not getting the amount of exercise they require to keep their bodies and minds sharp and in shape. Schools have reduced physical education programs and recess times, and the allure of screen games and television is allowing our kids to develop sedentary lifestyles. This is a leading problem in increased childhood obesity and the development of diabetes.
Jan and Pat Sweeney, owners of Fleet Feet Sports Sacramento, have been supporting local elementary schools with free after-school running programs for several years. Having seen the amazing accomplishments of the children in these programs, the Sweeney's launched Project Fit in 2010 which now has over 1500 students participating in 20 Sacramento schools.
